Initial
Design Service
Canyon Media's initial design service includes design for new
publications and redesign for existing publications. This service
creates the brand image/identity for your publication and typically
includes:
- design of the cover and cover logo, tagline development support, etc.;
- design of all unique editorial sections, pages or stories in a
publication (e.g., table of contents, departments, special
departments and features, etc.);
- development of the publication style/style guide (e.g., fonts, type
treatments, photo and illustration styles, color palette, etc.);
- development of templates (QuarkXpress or
Adobe InDesign file formats), to be used to
facilitate consistent and ongoing
production design; and
- complementary consulting (see below).
Production Design Service
This service is defined as the task of taking real editorial and
advertising content, creating layouts, going through the proofing
process, making necessary editorial changes and preparing the
hi-resolution digital files required for print
production. This service requires that clients provide existing file
templates or style guides that define the design and production
specifications of the magazine. Canyon Media's Production Design
Service is ideal for
existing publishers who can benefit from
outsourcing the ongoing production layout for their magazine, for
art
departments who need an extra hand designing individual
stories, or start-up publishers who do not have the in-house staff necessary. This service includes:
- layout/design of each page, based on the client providing a
style guide or template for the publication;
- assignment of photography and/or illustration (i.e.,
identifying
and contracting with a photographer or artist to create the art);
- researching stock art (searching/identifying
appropriate stock art from online stock agencies);
- retouching images (i.e., color correction, image
manipulation, etc.);
- photo editing (selecting the best, most appropriate
photos to use from a photographers' submission);
- placement of advertising art, including an evaluation
of each ad to ensure files are to spec;
- ad design;
- proofing edits (making changes to copy as required by
the client's editors and copy editors);
- creation of high-resolution PDFs, based on the
printer's specific requirements; and
- production liaison (working with the client's printer
to ensure the highest quality production and on-time delivery).
Consulting Services
Canyon Media provides
stand-alone consulting services to clients, based on an hourly rate. In addition, we offer complimentary consulting to design clients, which can be particularly useful if
you are new to the publishing business. Canyon Media has vast experience in many aspects of the business including:
- editorial
development/planning (i.e., helping clients determine the right type of
editorial,
identifying writers, contract negotiation, determining in-house
work-flow processes, etc.);
- print production (i.e., assisting the client in
identifying a printer,
setting production specifications, production liaison, etc.);
- circulation/distribution planning (i.e., developing
newsstand distribution, subscription base, promotions,
etc.); and
- advertising sales planning and support
(i.e., creation of media kits, developing sales strategies,
etc.)
- general business planning (i.e., determining budgets,
operations, staffing needs, etc.)

Every project is bid separately to include a total cost for
services. For initial design or redesign quotes, we need to know
how many unique sections, pages or stories will be involved in the
design—each unique section, page or story requires time for stand alone
design as well as template development. Production design quotes are
based on a per-page fee for internal pages, plus an additional fee for
covers. We offer discounts for multiple issues as well as production
design services that run concurrent with an initial design contract. As
previously mentioned, all design clients receive complimentary
consulting as a value-added service.
